Why SASE and AI Security Are the Same Problem

The architecture patterns that made Zero Trust work for enterprise networks are exactly what AI runtime security needs. Here's why the industry is about to figure that out.

The first time I deployed a Zero Trust architecture for a Fortune 500 client, the hardest part wasn't the technology. It was convincing the security team that every connection is untrusted by default — including internal ones.

That mental shift took months.

We're about to have the exact same conversation about AI.

The Pattern Repeats

In network security, the old model was perimeter-based. Castle and moat. Get inside the wall, you're trusted. We spent a decade learning that was wrong.

SASE solved it by pushing policy enforcement to the edge, inspecting every session, treating identity and context as the control plane — not network location.

AI security in 2026 looks like network security in 2015. Most organizations are running LLMs with implicit trust. Prompts go in, outputs come out, and nobody's inspecting what's happening in between.

What Runtime Security Actually Means

When I talk about AI runtime security, I mean the same thing I mean for network runtime security:

  • Continuous inspection — every inference request is a session to be evaluated
  • Behavioral baselines — what does normal look like, and what's anomalous
  • Policy enforcement at the edge — before the model responds, not after the damage is done
  • Cross-service visibility — attacks chain across services, detection has to as well

The OWASP LLM Top 10 reads like an early OWASP Web Top 10. Prompt injection is SQL injection. Insecure output handling is XSS. We've solved these classes of problems before — the primitives transfer.

Where the Industry Is Heading

The vendors are catching up. Runtime AI security is becoming a product category. But the practitioners who understand why the architecture works — not just that it works — are going to have the advantage.

That's the signal worth paying attention to.

The engineers who understood Zero Trust at the architecture level — not just as a vendor checkbox — are the ones running enterprise security programs today. The same is coming for AI.
